30 Days to Better Citizenship – Task #7

Today’s task?  Visit your local public library and obtain a library card.  If you already possess a library card (I do), then check out a book or two or pay any outstanding fines.

Oh, Snap.

Not only do I possess a library card, (I have had a local public library card for every community I have lived in since I was 8 years old.  At the time, we lived in Key West, FL and I would ride my bike to the library to escape the heat – and my boring(!) childhood life.  Since then, I have been hooked on libraries and the adventures they harbor within their large stacks of books) but my children also have their own library cards.  Unfortunately, my sweet, book-loving children do not treat their library responsibilities as seriously as they should and, consequently, they often keep their borrowed books longer than the time allotted them by the due dates stamped on the check-out slip (sometimes three weeks just simply IS NOT enough time to read a book or two...).  Anyway, due to my younger daughter’s inadvertent misplacing of the last two books she checked out from the Public Library, she owes a whopping $30.94!

She checked out a couple of books about Susan B. Anthony and Lucretia Mott to use as research on her History Day project and put them in the Black Hole, AKA, her school locker.  Mind you, she checked those puppies out before the Winter Break and finally brought them home LAST WEEK for me to return for her.  No wonder the librarians notified the Authorities - who then promptly issued a warrant for her arrest.

So, I guess it’s time to come clean and make amends with my friends over at the Joplin Public Library.  Over the lunch hour I will go and pay my deviant lovely child’s fine.  But, trust me, dinner this weekend will be on her!
